Definitions Of Diversity - North America

North America

Diversity is ‘otherness’ or those human qualities that are different from our own and outside the groups to which we belong yet are present in other individuals and groups. Important to distinguish between primary and secondary dimensions of diversity.

Primary includes aspects such as age, race, gender, disability etc while secondary dimensions are those that can be changes and include; educational background, geographical location and marital status amongst others. Further information can be found on the University of Maryland website at www.inform.umd.edu/EdRes/Topic/Diversity

One Government agency in the province of Saskatchewan in Canada recognises diversity in the workplace as referring to “all of the characteristics that make individuals different from each other. These differences can include factors such as race, ethnicity, gender, or having a disability.” Further information on The Police Commissions policy towards diversity in the workplace can be found at www.gov.sk.ca/psc/diversity/default.htm
